Turning Gratitude Into Opportunity

WHEN IT COMES TO SUPPORTING the 乐播传媒视频 Foundation, everything comes back to investing in the local community, according to Daniel W. Anner 鈥19, M.S. 鈥21.

Anner, originally from Central Jersey, built the foundations of his technology support business as a high school student and graduated from 乐播传媒视频 with a degree in Computer Science and , but he was actually drawn to the campus鈥檚 scenic beauty after attending an open house.
鈥淲hen we walked around Lake Fred, I fell in love with the environment and ambiance of the school 鈥 truly one of a kind,鈥 Anner said. 鈥淎s I looked more into it, I learned that 乐播传媒视频 offered a program combining computer science and information systems, and that made me really want to go. I felt at home when I came to campus.鈥
That early connection deepened during his freshman year, when Anner took an introductory programming course with Scott Huston, who now serves as 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 vice president for Information Technology Services and chief information officer.
Huston helped Anner come out of his shell and suggested that he join the on-campus IT Help Desk as a student worker on his second day of class.
鈥淪cott and Pete Gallagher provided me with tons of opportunities to improve and grow my skills, and not even just the technical ones: more so the interpersonal skills and customer service, because I really struggled with that,鈥 Anner said. 鈥淭he university as a whole, between all my experiences in different classes and whatnot, helped form me into a more well-rounded individual.鈥
HE ALSO MET his future best man and business partner, Greg Walsh 鈥19, M.S. 鈥21, while working at the Help Desk. 鈥淲e both got our bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees from the same programs at 乐播传媒视频. The university has helped both of our careers, and we enjoy giving back to the community that supported and built us up.鈥
Giving to 乐播传媒视频 helps support the local economy, and we're investing in the place that we live and operate in.鈥
During his junior year, Anner worked full-time in 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 Enterprise Resource Planning department, supporting the technology that runs the campus. He also refined his skills and grew his business, helping local senior centers in his off time.
鈥淸The Help Desk] would get a ton of calls at the time from the elderly homes around here asking, 鈥楥an someone help us?鈥 So, they routed them all to me, and I'd gladly go over and help them out, sit with them for two or three hours, whatever they needed. 乐播传媒视频 was always supportive and let me continue to grow my business,鈥 Anner shared.
REFLECTING ON HIS COLLEGIATE experience, Anner expressed gratitude for his alma mater鈥檚 community and academic programming, which made his decision to give back an easy one.
He and Walsh are currently exploring offering internships for the next generation at to give them the technological experience and social skills needed to enter the industry. In the meantime, he plans to continue supporting the 乐播传媒视频 Foundation, which awards more than $1 million in annual scholarship support.
He hopes to give future Ospreys the opportunity to grow and develop as professionals with the community and resources that 乐播传媒视频 provides, as he did. 鈥淚 was very fortunate, and I didn't have much trouble getting in and through college, and I know there are lots of smart people that just don't have the means, so I just want to help those who weren鈥檛 as fortunate as me,鈥 Anner said.
鈥溊植ゴ绞悠 has different programs that try to get people industry experience, and pretty much all the professors I met were not only super caring but cared deeply about what they do for students,鈥 Anner continued. 鈥淸Greg and I] still have friends who work for the institution, helping raise the next generation of IT professionals in South Jersey, and that is important to us. Giving to 乐播传媒视频 helps support the local economy, and we're investing in the place that we live and operate in.鈥

Rooting Down and Supporting the Growth of the Next Generation

FOR JANICE CAMBRON 鈥79, returning to her roots in South Jersey marked the beginning of her ongoing support for 乐播传媒视频 and its campus.

Cambron was living and working as a medical assistant in Washington, D.C., when she received a call about her mother鈥檚 sudden illness. She was also in the midst of debating a career change 鈥 Cambron was developing a desire to pursue the field of public health.
That鈥檚 when she remembered the college in the woods not too far from her mother, who still resided in her hometown of Egg Harbor Township.
鈥淚 got interested in public health, and 乐播传媒视频 miraculously had a Public Health program. I think I probably transferred in with more credits than anybody else in 乐播传媒视频's history,鈥 Cambron said with a smile.
CAMBRON REMINISCES ON DAYS reminisces on days full of studying hard and playing even harder. When she wasn鈥檛 hard at work and learning from her professors, she played racquetball with her peers.
鈥淓verybody was very friendly,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll of the professors were great: they were all involved with the students and very accessible. The campus was a little more rugged than it is now, but we had a pub, and that was great fun.鈥
She also remembers the relief she felt at receiving a scholarship during her senior year. 鈥淚t really was a big help to me, especially being an older student, so it's always been important to me to give back to 乐播传媒视频. And, you know, as long as I can do it, I like to do as much as I can.鈥
After graduating from 乐播传媒视频, Cambron built a career centered on service and care for others. She spent 35 years at Seashore Gardens Living Center, serving first as assistant executive director and later as executive director until her retirement in 2019.
A licensed nursing home administrator and certified assisted living administrator, she led innovative programs for residents, fostered partnerships with 乐播传媒视频 students through internships in health sciences and physical therapy and created opportunities for young people to engage with older adults through volunteer service.

Supporting 乐播传媒视频 is important to me because it prepares students to be able to engage with others, whether in our own backyards or around the world, and one of the things I always loved about 乐播传媒视频 was how diverse the student population is 鈥 they try to give everybody an opportunity."
NOW, AS A PROUD ALUMNA, Cambron鈥檚 relationship with the University has continued to grow. She is a frequent participant in programs and courses hosted by the 乐播传媒视频 Center on Successful Aging and the 乐播传媒视频 Institute for Lifelong Learning.
For more than two decades, she has also supported and attended 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 annual Scholarship Benefit Gala, reflecting her longstanding commitment to helping provide educational opportunities for today鈥檚 Ospreys.
Cambron is also a member of the 乐播传媒视频 Evergreen Society, which recognizes her more than 30 years of giving to the 乐播传媒视频 Foundation and support for student scholarships, much like the one she received in her senior year.
鈥淪upporting 乐播传媒视频 is important to me because it prepares students to be able to engage with others, whether in our own backyards or around the world, and one of the things I always loved about 乐播传媒视频 was how diverse the student population is 鈥 they try to give everybody an opportunity,鈥 Cambron said.
鈥淲hen you give, you get, and when you give to good causes, you get good feelings and good karma,鈥 Cambron continued. 鈥淵ou're helping someone to achieve a goal they've set, and giving back to your community and society helps make it better."
Through her continued generosity, Cambron is helping ensure that today鈥檚 students have access to the same opportunities that shaped her journey, creating an impact for generations to come.

From Pune to Galloway: Honoring a Legacy Through Giving Back
By Loukaia Taylor '22
A CHILD'S LOVE for their parents knows no distance 鈥 not even almost 8,000 miles, as shown by a 乐播传媒视频 professor whose determination to share the American dream with his parents led him to leave their legacy on a university campus they never had the chance to visit.

Before he was a long-standing professor within 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 program, Renganathan Iyer was the youngest of six children born to a couple in Pune, a city in western India.
Education was highly valued in their household; despite Iyer鈥檚 mother never attending school, every single one of her children pursued and earned at least their bachelor鈥檚 degree. Iyer鈥檚 connection to education ran even deeper because of his shared love of mathematics with his father.
For Iyer, this wasn鈥檛 just the catalyst for his journey in higher education, but also the way his parents showed their love for him and his siblings.
鈥淚 think that's the best thing we can do as parents: to give them a good education,鈥 Iyer said.
With that gift, Iyer earned a merit scholarship, enabling him to attend a prestigious Ph.D. program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
BY 1991, IYER was the recipient of a year-long teaching position within 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 Mathematics program. As evidenced by his impressive three-decade tenure, Iyer was more than a good fit in 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 campus community. 鈥淚 decided to stay put,鈥 Iyer said emphatically.
鈥淲hat attracted me to 乐播传媒视频 was it鈥檚 commitment to teaching and it鈥檚 encouragement of interdisciplinary research amongst faculty members.鈥
鈥淎nd our class size is very small within Mathematics, with a maximum of 35 students, which is unheard of for most college classes,鈥 Iyer continued. 鈥淚t's nice to have that interaction with the students.鈥
Iyer didn鈥檛 just love 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 ideals or its students. The community that he created of faculty, students and staff became integral to his life, even after he married and began a family of his own.
Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding tourist visa procedures prevented Iyer鈥檚 father and mother from visiting the United States before their passing in 2004 and 2018, respectively.

DESPITE HER EFFORTS to ensure that Iyer received the education she was never promised, his mother never got to see Iyer teaching and inspiring the next generation, and his father never had the opportunity to witness his grandchildren鈥檚 inherited love and passion for mathematics.
For me, this is a small thing to do because what I've gotten from 乐播传媒视频 in the last 35 years is priceless.
With that in mind, Iyer and his wife, Anu Vedantham, decided to donate to the 乐播传媒视频 University Foundation to dedicate a bench in memory of his parents, placing it in his favorite place on campus: along one of the paths to Lake Fred.
鈥淭he fact that they couldn't come here definitely bothered me, so at least this is a nice way of, I think, giving something back to the community, as well as honoring my parents鈥 memory here,鈥 Iyer shared.
鈥淚 thought donating a bench was a lovely decision considering 乐播传媒视频 has been his home for 35 years, and he鈥檚 taught thousands of students, some of whom come back to visit him from time to time. Benches help, not just for fundraising, but for bringing people and memories back to campus,鈥 Vedantham said of the donation.
Vedantham had fond memories of her years working at 乐播传媒视频 in various roles including founding the Atlantic County Educational Technology Training Center (ETTC), which is now the Southern Regional Institute (SRI). The Rowan University library administrator describes her and Iyer鈥檚 relationship to 乐播传媒视频's campus community as 鈥渞emarkably close.鈥
鈥淭he Math program is like a family,鈥 Vedantham said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very special community where people look out for each other. It鈥檚 乐播传媒视频 that makes relationships like this possible.鈥
Additionally, he plans to include 乐播传媒视频 in his estate planning, which he hopes will support students on their collegiate journeys. 鈥淔or me, this is a small thing to do because what I've gotten from 乐播传媒视频 in the last 35 years is priceless.鈥
鈥淎nything that's student-centered, I want to contribute towards it,鈥 Iyer continued, mentioning that he also supports 乐播传媒视频鈥檚 Math program through a monthly recurring gift. 鈥淚 think if you鈥檝e gotten a lot from 乐播传媒视频, it just makes sense to give back, so my goal is to give back as much as I can.鈥
Iyer鈥檚 love for his parents knows no distance, and he鈥檚 no longer separated from them by 8,000 miles. Through his generosity, he has created a place on campus where he can reflect, share his day and take in his favorite view, surrounded by the love and legacy that shaped his life.
Honoring Generosity. Inspiring Impact.
